The Red Shed Event Center: A Journey of Transformation and Community Impact

In the heart of Clarion, a hidden gem awaits – The Red Shed Event Center. It's not just an event venue; it's a testament to vision, resilience, and the power of community. As we explore the story behind The Red Shed, you'll discover how Julie and Steve, the driving forces behind this establishment, have transformed a cattle shed into a thriving hub for celebrations and gatherings.

A Unique Transformation

The Red Shed Event Center offers an array of versatile spaces for meetings, reunions, weddings, and various events. Located on the north edge of Clarion, its picturesque surroundings provide a perfect backdrop for photo opportunities. But, how did it all begin?

Julie's father, John Hagie, had been in the cattle business for years and had been using the Red Shed for annual cattle sales. In 2017, with the decision to close the cattle business, the question arose: What to do with the building? Julie and Steve recognized the need in Clarion and the surrounding area for a venue like this, and so, in November of 2017, The Red Shed Event Center was born. With existing features like a bar and bathrooms, they set about making significant improvements, including air conditioning, heating, carpeting, draping, lighting, and more.

A Hub for Community

One of The Red Shed's most significant accomplishments is the role it plays in bringing people to Clarion. In a single year, they host numerous events, from weddings to land auctions. A striking fact is that many of these events draw visitors from out of town, contributing to the local economy by utilizing hotels, restaurants, gas stations, and other retail businesses. Their dedication to service has been recognized by the community, as they were voted "The Best Venue" in the 2021 Readers Choice Messenger awards.

Giving Back

The Red Shed Event Center is more than just a venue; it's a place with a big heart. They donate their rental fees to various charitable organizations, supporting causes like the Turkey Federation, Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, CGD Sports and Music Boosters, and Republican fundraisers, among others.

Supporting Local: A Vital Part of Our Community

The Red Shed Event Center not only thrives as a business but also recognizes the importance of supporting local enterprises. From restaurants to local contractors, this collaborative effort helps our community's economy flourish.

Our Favorite Local Restaurants

When it comes to dining in Clarion, our top picks are El Jalapeno Mexican, Grounded, and Fuel. These establishments have not only provided us with great meals but have also extended their culinary talents to cater for our customers.

Local Businesses, Local Partners

We've had the privilege of working with some fantastic local businesses. Imagine That and Preppy Farmer have been instrumental in ensuring our events run smoothly, from unique décor to quality farm-to-table products. When it comes to major projects, we've turned to the expertise of GrassMasters and Hennigar Construction. Having such professionals in our town is a testament to the strength of our local business community.

Supporting local, from business to business, is vital for our local economy. It's a chain reaction that keeps the heart of our community thriving. We believe in the power of collaboration and the strength it brings to Clarion.

Overcoming Challenges

While the journey has been filled with success, it hasn't been without its hurdles. The most notable challenge was undoubtedly the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite the difficulties, The Red Shed persevered by hosting the events they could to keep their doors open.

A Legacy of Praise

The Red Shed Event Center has garnered a reputation for excellence. They receive continuous compliments from attendees who appreciate the facility's quality and the impact it has on the community. Their reviews speak volumes about the service and experience they provide.

Constant Improvement

In the pursuit of excellence, The Red Shed is committed to continuous upgrades and improvements. Their dedication to enhancing the experience includes recent additions like a chandelier, more draping, new front landscaping, and a paved walkway at their outdoor ceremony area.

A Message to Aspiring Entrepreneurs

Julie and Steve's journey serves as inspiration. They wish they had started this venture when they were younger, and they encourage others with a dream to go for it.

A Bright Future

Looking ahead, The Red Shed Event Center envisions a path of growth. Julie and Steve see themselves continuing for a few more years, with the possibility of their daughter-in-law taking the reins someday. Their retirement from their "day jobs" has made this venture even more rewarding.

Fun and Rewarding Partnership

Working together as a couple, Julie and Steve find joy in their shared venture. They also appreciate their bartenders, who bring an extra layer of excitement to the mix

The Red Shed Event Center's journey is a remarkable one, demonstrating the power of transformation, community impact, and the vital role of supporting local businesses in our community's success.

Celebrating 25 Years of Heartland Museum: An Ode to Clarion's Treasure

Nestled on Highway 3 in Clarion, Iowa, the Heartland Museum stands as a testament to the spirit of community and preservation. For 25 years, this remarkable institution has been a beacon of local history, culture, and camaraderie. Today, we delve into the heart of the Heartland Museum, discovering the story of its humble beginnings, its journey of growth, and the vision that keeps it thriving.

Our Journey: From Five Groups to a Community Gem

In 1999, the Heartland Museum took its first steps towards becoming the largest museum in Wright County. But its story doesn't start there. The museum's roots are woven from the passions and dedication of five distinct groups: tractor collectors, Teddy Bear collectors, Hat collectors, Wright County Historical Society, and Clarion Arts Council. These visionaries shared a unique perspective of what their small town could be with the right kind of cultural treasure.

Building a Community Hub

The Heartland Museum has become the heart of Clarion, routinely welcoming over 1,800 visitors each year, with a peak year of over 4,000. Beyond being a repository of historical items, the museum serves as a dynamic hub for the community. It offers a versatile community room for rent to the public, extending its generosity to support other local groups like the Retail Group, Iowa Extension, EMTs, and more. It's the museum's way of giving back to those who enrich its mission.

A Tradition of Giving

As the Heartland Museum approaches its 25th anniversary, it's gearing up to make it an exceptional celebration. The museum extends its spirit of giving by offering free rentals to the community, providing free programs for the public, participating in community events whenever possible, and awarding an annual scholarship. The challenge? To continually bring in more visitors.

Evolving for Excellence

For the Heartland Museum, adaptation is key. To remain vibrant and enticing, the museum constantly evolves, reworking its ads, promotions, website, and social media presence. This commitment to staying current has paid off, with an overwhelmingly positive response from its visitors who frequently describe it as "AWESOME!"

The Path Forward

The Heartland Museum envisions a promising future. Plans include erecting a new building to expand displays, such as a section with stalls resembling a barn for showcasing animal-related equipment, more vehicles on display, enlarging the "fire department" section, and creating a 1960s-themed room. However, these dreams require resources, including approximately $500,000 to build the space and additional funds to complete it.

Join Us on This Journey

The Heartland Museum's story is one of passion, community, and continuous growth. It's an institution that captures the heart and spirit of Clarion. As it celebrates 25 years, we invite you to become a part of its narrative. Visit us, support us, and discover the treasures that lie within the Heartland Museum. Together, we can help this cherished institution continue to thrive, sharing the history and heart of our community with the world.
